Why Lake Wales tree services are their own job
Drive south out of Lakeland and the land starts to climb. The ridge runs about 100 miles north to south through Central Florida and is named for this city, which sits near its midpoint. Its deep, porous sands hold one of the oldest scrub habitats in Florida. In the scrub you will find sand live oak, with thick leathery leaves curled at the edges to hold moisture, along with saw palmetto, prickly pear and scrub plum.

Lake Wales tree removal permits: the 4-inch, 15-foot threshold
Under Section 23-214 of the Lake Wales code, a permit is required to remove or relocate a “tree,” and the code defines a tree as any woody plant measuring at least 4 inches in diameter at 4.5 feet above the ground and standing at least 15 feet tall. That catches far smaller trees than most nearby cities regulate.
There are exemptions. The code lists undesirable species that are exempt from the permit, including:
- Australian pine
- Brazilian pepper
- Chinaberry
- Paper mulberry
- Punk tree (melaleuca)
Removing individual citrus trees is also exempt. Separately, Florida Statute 163.045 overrides local rules for risky residential trees: with qualifying documentation of an unacceptable risk, Lake Wales may not demand an application, fee or replacement trees.

A surveyor named Sidney Irving Wailes renamed Watts Lake after himself in 1879, and when the Lake Wales Land Company planned a town on its shore in 1911 and 1912, the spelling was simplified to Wales.
